Bookstore Manager – High-Traffic Retail Location

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Bookstore Manager to lead daily operations in a fast-paced, high-traffic retail environment around the southwest corner of Central Park. This role is ideal for a motivated leader who combines a passion for books with strong business acumen and team management skills. This person will need to take initiative and be adaptable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of daily store operations to ensure an exceptional customer experience
  • Develop and manage staff and event schedules to support business needs
  • Hire, train, supervise, and mentor a high-performing team
  • Manage inventory across all categories, including frontlist and backlist titles for both children and adults
  • Execute strategic buying decisions, including sideline merchandise and related products
  • Supervise receiving, stocking, and merchandising of books and ancillary items
  • Monitor and reconcile financial transactions, ensuring accuracy and accountability
  • Analyze sales data, trends, and local market conditions to inform purchasing and promotional strategies
  • Plan and implement sales initiatives, in-store promotions, and community-facing events
  • Maintain and grow strong relationships with publishers, distributors, and vendors

Qualifications:

  • Previous bookstore experience is required
  • Previous management experience, preferably in bookselling or a similar high-volume environment
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in inventory management and merchandising
  • Ability to interpret sales data and translate insights into actionable strategies
  • Passion for literature and knowledge of current publishing trends across genres and age groups
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, customer-focused setting

The Powerhouse Bookstores is looking for an experienced, passionate, self-motivated full-time or part-time (3-5 days) bookseller who has a strong interest in photography, design, and literature. Our 2500 sf book boutique focuses on photography and illustrated books, and has a curated fiction/non-fiction, and children’s books section. Unchanged: The powerhouse Arena , a bookstore, art and event space in the Dumbo area of Brooklyn, is looking for an experienced, passionate, self-motivated full-time or part-time (3-4 days) bookseller who has a strong interest in photography, design, and literature.

We are looking for a dedicated, sales-driven individual with a strong work ethic, maybe a bit of style, a welcoming demeanor, and a friendly personality. Experience in event programming, bookstore ordering a plus.
