The James Beard Award-winning chef of NYC's Red Rooster Harlem discusses his new memoir, Yes, Chef, with fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi.

About Yes, Chef:

Yes, Chef is Marcus Samuelsson's candid, unconventional memoir about food and family and the sacrifices made in discovering one's own prodigious talent and ambition.

"I have never seen a picture of my mother," writes Marcus as he begins the unforgettable story of being orphaned at the age of three in Ethiopia. He—along with his mother and sister—were battling tuberculosis when they walked seventy-five miles from their remote village to a hospital in the capital city of Addis Adaba. Tragically, his mother succumbed to the disease, but Marcus and his sister survived, and were adopted by a loving family in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was there that Marcus's grandmother, Helga, sparked in him a lifelong passion for cooking with pan-fried herring, freshly baked bread, and her signature roast chicken.

Yes, Chef chronicles Samuelsson's incredible journey from Helga's humble kitchen to some of the most demanding restaurants in Switzerland and France, grueling stints on cruise ships and ultimately, his arrival in New York City, where at Aquavit, he earned a coveted three-star rating from The New York Times at the age of twenty-four, making him the youngest chef ever to receive such an accolade. But Samuelsson's career of "chasing flavors," as he calls it, had only just begun. In intervening years, there have been White House State dinners, personal crises, public failures, reality show triumphs and the opening of his beloved Red Rooster in Harlem, where Samuelsson has finally fulfilled his dream of creating a truly diverse and vibrant dining room—a place where presidents and prime ministers rub elbows with jazz musicians, aspiring artists, bus drivers, and nurses. It is a place where an orphan born in Ethiopia, raised in Sweden, living in America, can feel at home.

About Marcus Samuelsson:

A James Beard Award-winning chef and author of several cookbooks, Marcus Samuelsson has appeared on Today, Charlie Rose, Iron Chef, and Top Chef Masters, where he took first place. In 1995, for his work at Aquavit, Samuelsson became the youngest chef ever to receive a three-star review from The New York Times. His newest restaurant, Red Rooster, recently opened in Harlem, where he lives with his wife.
