"Overdressed does for T-shirts and leggings what Fast Food Nation did for burgers and fries."—Katha Pollitt, The Nation
In her new book, Elizabeth L. Cline addresses the ethical and environmental problems surrounding our addiction to "fast fashion," and tells us what we can do to change our habits. Alison Feldmann of Etsy will join her in discussion.
About Overdressed
Until recently, Elizabeth Cline was a typical American consumer. She'd grown accustomed to buying a new item of clothing almost every week (the national average is 64 per year) at outlet malls, discount stores, and cheap but trendy retailers. But all she had to show for it was a messy closet and countless storage bins packed with low-quality fads she barely wore. She soon realized that something was deeply wrong.
In Overdressed:The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, Cline sets out to uncover the true nature of the cheap fashion juggernaut and ultimately shows how consumers can break the buy-and-toss cycle by supporting innovative and stylish sustainable designers and retailers, refashioning clothes throughout their lifetime, and mending and even making clothes themselves.
