ABOUT THE SPACE The powerHouse Arena is a gallery, boutique, and event space boasting a soaring 24 foot-ceiling over the 5,000-square foot ground floor showcasing arena-style seating surrounded by 175 linear feet of glass frontage designed by architect David Howell. This stunning space, home to a series of landmark exhibitions and events, is available for private hire. The Arena has been home to the after party for the St. Ann’s Warehouse world premier live performance of Lou Reed’s Berlin, directed by Julian Schnabel; the launch for Black Girls Rock, Inc., a non-profit organization, who hosted a birthday party for VH1 Hip Hop Honoree MC Lyte; a film shoot for Nokia and a Sara Jessica Parker TV commercial; a Law & Order screening party and a film screening for clothing and accessories company, Indigo Handloom. The powerHouse Arena has also hosted an exhibition in conjunction with the 5th annual BKLYN DESIGNS, and the American Cancer Society fundraiser Eat, Drink, Live. Magazines as diverse as Ladies Home Journal and Surface have used the space for editorial photo shoots. “I was inspired to capture the transformation of a raw space which would later be juxtaposed with its finished and polished form,” said Klitos Teklos, art director, “It was the contradiction of elements: construction site versus a glamorous fashion shoot and making something out of nothing, creating a believable environment out of a non-existing one.” At our previous gallery in Manhattan, powerHouse was home to some of the city’s most entertaining and acclaimed exhibitions, featuring work from both popular culture as well as the established art world with themes including music, fashion, politics, and sports. Individual exhibitions have included The LeRoy Neiman Sketchbook: 1964–Liston vs. Clay/1965–Ali vs. Liston; A Time Before Crack: Jamel Shabazz; Hip Hop Files, 1979–1984: Martha Cooper; Touch Me I’m Sick: Charles Peterson; Public Access: Ricky Powell; The Forbidden Pictures: Larry Fink; Made in the U.K.: The Music of Attitude 1977–1983: Janette Beckman; and Autograf, New York City’s Graffiti Writers: Peter Sutherland—all of which have attracted mass media coverage and have been accompanied by full-house opening nights. The former gallery space was also host to private exhibitions, charity auctions, photography award ceremonies, and listening parties. DUMBO Essential Information: Contact |
