Al Gore, Jonathan Franzen, Jennifer Egan, Nassim Taleb, Tracy K. Smith, A.S. Byatt, Rick Moody, Paul Auster, Colum McCann, and Jamaica Kincaid are among the many authors who have read and signed books in our unforgettable space. We’ve also hosted special events like the New Yorker Speakeasy, PEN World Voices, the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35, and L Magazine’s Literary Upstart. Beginning in April 2013, we partnerned with Penguin Classics on a series of in-conversation events that bring contemporary writers together to celebrate influential classics. The diverse voices of NYC’s established and emerging literary community make for uniquely curated and inventive book programming; we’ve incorporated exhibitions, video screenings, DJs, and even live graffiti art into our discussions and launch parties. The POWERHOUSe Arena “An Athenian theater of pop-culture debate.” –Wallpaper In fall 2006, world-renowned and critically-acclaimed independent art book publisher powerHouse Books launched The POWERHOUSE Arena, a laboratory for creative thought that features exhibitions, installations, presentations, displays, viewings, performances, readings, and retail therapy—drawing upon photography, literature, and popular culture as sources of inspiration. Every month the powerHouse Books design team works with Arena staff to create a widely distributed events calendar printed on quality cardstock. No flyers on flimsy white paper—we use author photos, jacket images, and our cutting-edge aesthetic to craft individual, large-format posters for each event. We maintain an engaging dialogue with followers of our heavily trafficked Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr accounts, consistently resulting in good event attendance and high sales. To further spread the word, we send a weekly newsletter profiling upcoming events to over 15,000 subscribers.
We’ve had the pleasure of hosting highly successful book events with David Mitchell, Jonathan Franzen, Peter Hook, Jennifer Egan, Joseph O’Neill, Deb Perelman (Smitten Kitchen), Nassim Taleb, Pete Hamill, A.S. Byatt, and Salman Rushdie, and more. Our carefully curated children’s section features an unparalleled collection of children’s books and European and Japanese art and game kits. We host weekly story time readings and a popular middle grade book club at our Park Slope location, powerHouse on 8th, to engage young readers face-to-face. Recent appearances have included authors and illustrators Tad Hills, David Levithan, R.J. Palacio, Carin Berger, Susan Orlean, Brett Helquist, and Amy Hest. We promote our kids events as passionately as we promote events for adults—young readers, after all, determine the future for bookstores like ours.
Our 10,200-square-foot marquee showroom, designed by esteemed architectural firm David Howell Design, is the only book space of its kind in New York City. We have over 175 feet of glass frontage, and the ceiling soars 24 feet above the 5,000-square-foot ground floor. The equally impressive 5,200-square-foot mezzanine is home to the powerHouse Books offices. Our Skylounge is located on the mezzanine level and functions as a gallery, VIP lounge, and author green room. The powerHouse Arena can hold up to 500 people and offers the following amenities: 24-hour access to loading dock, 3 toilets, VIP area, full sound system including 2 Technics 1200MK turntables, 2 Pioneer CDJ1000MK3 turntables, 1 Vestax VMC-004XL 4-Channel mixer, 2 Shure mics, and 2 Mackie speakers.
